I spoke in Southern’s chapel this month on Psalm 126. Several students and faculty thanked me for my message, so I thought I’d share it here. If you’d like to watch the message instead of read it, you can always do that.
Let’s examine Psalm 126 using three questions. The first question is “When?” That provides some context. The second question asks, “What does the Psalm mean?” That provides some interpretation.

The Gospel writers included Jesus’ quotation of Psalm 22 in their accounts because they wanted to evoke not just the first line, but the whole Psalm. This is a technique known as metalepsisand, according to Richard Hays, it unlocks many hidden meanings in the ways the New Testament quotes and alludes to the Old Testament.
Yes, Jesus faced the wrath of God on the cross because he was “pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities,” but that isn’t why he quoted Psalm 22 from the cross.
