June 2024 This is a good occasion to talk about variability in Paris restaurants. After having an incredible meal here four months ago and praising the restaurant’s consistency over time, I just had a bad experience. I brought some visiting friends, including a young man on his first-ever trip to Paris. The food was mostly very good, aside from a cassoulet that was fairly blackened and dry. My complaint is about the service and the pacing.

In three major films, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Imitation of Life (1959), Lana Turner proved that she was more than just a classic Hollywood exemplar of what hype and glamour can do. Michael Heizer’s piece, Double Negative (1969-1970)(like Smithson’s Spiral Jetty) is also a feat of engineering in the middle of a desolate landscape - though in Nevada instead of Utah for a change.
