Become a Supporting Subscriber Now I’ve been to some wonderful places in my life, but this weekend I found myself somewhere I never expected to be — living rent-free in comedian Jon Stewart’s head. Stewart was back for his second show on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and apparently felt the need to respond to my very real concerns over his dangerous both-sides-ism last week, when he equated President Biden and Donald.
Interviewer: When did you first meet Bob Dylan? The first official meeting was the Johnny Cash Show in 1969. We played that together. Afterward Johnny had a party at his house. So we met briefly there. Over the years there were a series of brief encounters. Tests. Little art games. I always had an affection for him. At one point we were at a concert whose concert was that? {shrugs} How soon we forget.
In the Summer of 2013, I went to Massey Hall to see Joni Mitchell headline a festival that had spent two days celebrating her music. Esperanza Spalding sang an exquisite “Dawntreader,” and Lizz Wright destroyed everyone with “The Wolf that Lives in Lindsay.” This was a festival for people who really love Joni Mitchell, who knew the words to that song. That week in Toronto was something of a dream. I hung out with a group of people I would never see again.
Some designers work is so closely associated with a single brand that it’s impossible to imagine that company’s products without them. Jonathan Ive’s design work at Apple on products like the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and countless desktop and laptop computers, has made him arguably the most influential designer of our time. A lot has changed since 2008, when I sat down with Jony at Apple’s design lab in Cupertino and interviewed him for Objectified.
My sports media course You see leaves move ominously at night, and instead of seeing a dinosaur, you see a metal container. A team of men, all worried, with many holding massive weapons, then move it into place, being very careful as weird noises come from inside the box. Then the head of the workers shouts, Jophery, raise the gate. It's when the gate rises that the entire cage is shaking.
I’ve spent way too much time thinking about Jordan Peterson. In my defense, he’s an insanely popular commentator—far more so, I think, than some of my friends and comrades on the Left seem to realize. Take his book 12 Rules for Life. It’s mostly unobjectionable and uninteresting self-help advice, although Dr. Peterson also sprinkles in an implicit defense of capitalism, some impressively inaccurate evolutionary theory, and a pages-long denunciation of something called “postmodern neo-Marxism.
Good morning. Thanks to all who shared and gave positive feedback on Thursday’s newsletter on J.J. Redick. Lots of action to cover this morning. Let’s basketball. ScoresNets 93, Raptors 121 — Horrifying stuff from the Nets. Knicks 110, Sixers 96 — Good win for New York considering that coming out of the break both Julius Randle and O.G. Anunoby remain out. Anunoby says he’ll be back before the playoffs. Randle might opt for surgery on his shoulder.
